Monterey, California:
Monterey Weekend, or simply "The
Weekend" to all classic car fanatics, will be held this year on August 13, 14, and
15, 2004 in the Monterey Bay area. The Weekend is full of classic car shows, sports &
muscle car auctions and automotive events.
Some of the most unique, historic and valuable automobiles from
around the world, including vehicles from 30 states and 14 countries, are set to convene
Sunday, August 15th for the 54th Pebble Beach Concours dElegance.
The annual affair along the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf
Links® this year honors the 100th anniversaries of Rolls-Royce and Hispano-Suiza and
showcases more than 200 of the most extraordinary collector cars in the world. "And
as a special treat for automobile enthusiasts," says Concours Co-Chairman Sandra
Kasky, "this years show will have the most significant display of classic
Ferraris in history."
The 54th annual affair also includes a series of auxiliary
activities, including the Thursday, August 12th Pebble Beach Tour dElegance around
the Monterey Peninsula for Concours entries and the Sunday evening Pebble Beach Auction
conducted by Gooding & Company that showcases classic, vintage and antique cars.
Proceeds from the Aug. 15, 2004 Pebble Beach Concours
dElegance support a number of local, national and international charities. More than
$7.5 million has been raised in previous years. Tickets for the Concours are $100 if
purchased in advance at www.pebblebeachconcours.net
or by calling 877-693-0009 toll-free. Tickets sold onsite are $125. Children under 12 are
admitted free.
For Italian car lovers the Concorso Italiano is at the Black Horse
Golf Course at Monterey Bay in Seaside on Friday, August 13. This year Ferrari is the
special marque and its the 50th. anniversary of the Alfa Romero Giulietta. Plus just
about every Lamborghini model ever made is usually on display too.
The event this year will have over 800 Italian cars, opera
performances, a fashion show and a sports car auction. Tickets are $100 per person at the
gate and include parking and an event program. Call 206-232-0365 for ticket and event
information or visit them on the web at www.concorso.com
There are several collector car sales events to choose from this
year and each one sells to a different clientele. Here are two of the very best of the
Monterey Weekend and you should attend both to enjoy the excitement up close and personal.
You never know, you might even be bidding with noted car collectors Nicolas Cage and Jay
Leno!
First up is the Blackhawk Collection Exposition of Classic Cars that
will again be displayed at the Peter Hay Golf Course across from the Pebble Beach Lodge.
Car Collectors Don & Rob Williams will offer for sale some of the finest Classic Cars
available over the Monterey Weekend from Wednesday August 11th thru Sunday August 15th.
Admission to the Exposition is free and the cars are always fantastic. Call 925-736-3444
for catalogs and information or visit them at www.blackhawkcollection.com
Next is my personal favorite collector car sale,
celebrating their 4th anniversary at The Monterey Weekend on Saturday, August 14th are
Drew & Josephine Alcazar of Russo and Steele. They are hosting another Sports &
Muscle " 100% NO RESERVE" car auction at the Marriott Hotel in Downtown
Monterey.
Russo and Steele will be going full throttle on the hottest night of
the car crazed weekend, Saturday night, starting at 5 PM with a memorabilia auction. After
that they will begin selling the best European, American Muscle, Sports Cars, Customs and
Hot Rods available for sale this weekend in the entire Monterey Bay area, all at 100%
no-reserve prices. This is the very best and the only "must see" car auction of
the Monterey Weekend!
The Historic Races are another don't miss event. For the entire week
at Mazda Raceway and open to the public on August 13, 14 and 15 are the Rolex Monterey
Historic Automobile Races presented by Chrysler. If you just want to walk around the
paddock and gawk, go on Friday, August 13th. If you want to see all the races, go for the
whole weekend.
And the cars - you name it, Shelby, Alfa, Mustang, Lotus, if it was
raced on this planet it will most likely show up at the Historic Races. This is a
three-day, vintage racecar extravaganza being held at Laguna Seca for the 31st time. Red
will be the predominant color as Ferrari, the fabled Italian sports and racing car marque,
is honored at the races this year. For ticket information call toll free 1-800-327-SECA
(7322) or go to www.montereyhistoric.com
Last, but not least, is the Blackhawk Museum in
Danville, California for their 16th Annual Post Pebble Beach Open House on Monday, August
16th from 10 AM to 5 PM. They will be offering live music, snacks and beverages,
docent-led museum tours and an opportunity to gradually re-enter the "real
world" following all the fabulous automotive events in Monterey Bay.
Admission is free during the Museums Open House and there is
plenty of parking for cars, trucks and trailers. Two automotive galleries display more
than 100 historically significant and artistically inspired automobiles, mostly
one-of-a-kind custom coach built cars dating from 1884 through 1971. The Blackhawk Museum
is now in association with the Smithsonian Institution and is the final car show for the
Weekend. Call 925-736-2280 for directions or visit the Museums website at www.blackhawkmuseum.org .
So mark your calendars, take a break and drive down
to Monterey Bay, even if its just for the day, and enjoy the cars, the people and
the weather, because its going to be another great "Monterey Weekend" in
2004. By Tony Leopardo ©
