San Francisco:
The all-new Chevrolet Cobalt is part of Chevy’s strategy to become a
major player in the compact car segment in the US. The old compact model
was the Cavalier and that car has been around forever. The 2005 Cobalt
is a quantum leap ahead of the model it replaces and brings with it a
higher level of refinement, quality and performance.
My test car was equipped with the base 2.2L DOHC 4
cylinder engine mated to a 4 speed electronic automatic transmission
with traction control at no extra charge. This drivetrain package
produced just the right of amount of power and performance for a 4-door
compact car and still delivers a respectable 24 MPG city and 32 MPG
highway fuel economy. And it does this with a long list of safety and
security packages that are standard of the Cobalt LT 4 door sedan.
With a base price of $18,195 plus the extras of
On-Star, side curtain airbags, XM satellite radio, a rear deck spoiler
and a premium sound system with CD and MP3 players this sedan is well
equipped. Adding in the $1,840 in options plus the $565 destination
charge the total MSRP came to only $20,600. This is a great price in the
compact class for a 4-door sedan with the power and pickup of a mid
sized car of just a few years ago.
Ride and handling was better than some of the best
in class cars from Japan and Korea, plus the trunk was spacious and the
rear doors opened up wide for easy access to the 60/40 folding rear
seats. Our friends Janis and Mark were in town for a convention and were
quite impressed with the Cobalt. Four adults were very comfortable on a
quick dinner trip to Noe Valley in San Francisco. This car is easy to
park and easy on the wallet. And with fuel economy that’s at the upper
end of the spectrum it makes the new Cobalt a Best Buy compact car for
2005.
Our Cobalt LT 4-door sedan was painted Blue Granite
Metallic and came with a nice neutral beige color interior. The LT
package included 16” polished alumimium wheels with P205/55R16 touring
tires for a smooth ride and great looks. Air Conditioning, 4-wheel
anti-lock brakes, dual stage airbags and battery rundown protection are
all included in the base price, plus power windows, mirrors, door locks
with keyless entry and heated leather seats.
The list of standard features is a long one, as
Chevrolet wants this car to be the leader in the compact car class. High
product content coupled with a low $18,000 base price tag gives Chevy a
great head start in this model segment, and that’s before the generous
cash discounts, sales programs and bonus bucks that are available in the
marketplace right now.
Call your Chevy dealer today to arrange a test
drive and you’ll be impressed with the Cobalt in all areas with the
competition. Size, performance, handling, ride and comfort are better
than most of all the compact cars on the market today. And in addition
the Cobalt is just plain fun to drive too. A combination that’s hard to
beat in today’s automotive world for the price. By
