The Bottom Line: Mazda Motor Corporation, commonly referred to as simply Mazda, is a Japanese multinational company that has been around for over 100 years, and in that time span they have learned a thing or two. Foremost is that American car buyers really like SUV's sport utility vehicles, and CUV's crossover utility vehicles. Mazda knows what sells and now builds 5 cars and 5 SUV's. As the US car market is split 50/50 with cars and SUV's, Mazda has both ends of the spectrum covered.

This week we are looking at the SUV and Crossover market with a Mazda CX-30.
Mazda starts with the compact CX-3, and then adds the CX-30 model, goes up to the CX-5, then adds a CX-5 Diesel edition, and tops out with the full size CX-9 SUV. Today we are going to review the 2020 Mazda CX-30 compact AWD all wheel drive SUV model with the Premium Package.

The CX-30 starts with a base price of only $21,900. They have 4 trim levels to chose from, Base, Select, Preferred and the Premium Package. The test car Mazda sent me this week is a CX-30 AWD Premium Package Edition SUV with a MSRP manufactures suggested retail price of $29,600. The options on the test car are: Frameless Automatic Dimming rear view mirror for $275, and the Navigation SD Card for $450. Then add in the $1,045 destination charge, and the total window sticker price came to: $31,370.

The Premium Package adds Leather trimmed sport seats, Heads Up Display, Rear Power Liftgate, 18" alloy wheels, a Leather wrapped steering wheel, AWD all wheel drive, Power sliding glass Moonroof, Full color Active Driving Display, Roof Rails, plus over 60 additional features. Here are a few of them for comparison to the competition:

The CX-30 engine is a SKYACTIV-G 186 hp with 186 lb-ft of torque 2.5L DOHC 16 valve 4 cylinder engine with variable valve timing and Cylinder Deactivation, mated to a SKYACTIV Drive 6 speed automatic transmission with Sport Mode. The engine has push button start, and the transmission has steering wheel paddle shifters.

This engine and trans set up has just enough power and torque to make everyday driving easy and responsive. While these are mid grade engine specs, the CX-30 gets good gas mileage numbers with this drive train. The car gets 25 MPG miles per gallon in city driving, 32 MPG in highway driving, and averages a very respectable 27 MPG in combined driving.

The greenhouse gas rating is a 6, out of 10, and the smog rating is a 7, out of 10. Both beat the average ratings for an SUV in this size and class range. Good to know that your helping to maintain the air quality with a cleaner running gas emissions compact SUV, than the gas guzzling Army Tank sized SUV that's parked next to you in the Costco parking lot.

And while compact SUV's are smaller then the rest of the group, that doesn't mean they are less safe. This CX-30 AWD SUV is loaded with safety and security features that rival the big brutes, but in a smaller, and more sophisticated way. Here is a short list of the most important one's that you want in any SUV.

·  Advanced dual front air bags
·  Front seat mounted side-impact air bags and side-impact air curtains
·  Driver's and front passenger's knee airbags
·  3-point safety belts for all seating positions
·  Anti-lock Brake System with Electronic Brake Force Distribution & Brake Assist
·  Dynamic Stability Control with a Traction Control System
·  Rear View Camera System
·  Smart Brake Support
·  Lane Departure Warning
·  Lane Keeping Assist
·  Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go
·  High Beam Control
·  Driver Attention Alert
·  Engine immobilizer antitheft system
·  Keyless remote panic button feature

Not to be outdone by it's competitors the CX-30 has a 8.8" color center stack display screen, HD radio with 2 USB ports, a Bose Premium Audio system with 12 speakers, Sirius XM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth hands free phone connectivity, dual zone climate settings, and steering wheel mounted audio controls.

The Mazda warranty covers the entire car for 3 years or 36,000 miles in the New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage plan, and then adds a 5 year or 60,000 mile Power Train Limited Warranty, plus a 3 year or 36,000 mile 24/7 Roadside Assistance Program, all at no additional charge. Mazda wants you to drive and enjoy your car, not to worry about it.

My Polymetal Gray Metallic CX-30 tester came with black body bumpers, a blacked out front grill, black body side moldings and polished silver roof rails. It has that tough exterior look, with a cushy white leather interior that adjusts, heats and conforms to your body just right. The ride, handling and comfort levels urge you to go on long drives, on a sunny day, just for the fun of it.

In addition to all the available comfort and convenience options the 2020 Mazda CX-30 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick too. And what is a IIHS Top Safety Pick? The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards are given to vehicles that perform admirably in crash testing and other evaluations performed by the organization. The CX-30 is rated as one of the best cars to be driving in the event of a crash.

The Mazda CX-30 fits into the small crossover segment that's bigger than subcompact models, but smaller than compact offerings. This crossover has all the content, options, and safety features that you want, and need in a SUV, and none of the extra baggage that the larger SUV's have. It's sharp looking, fuel efficient, comfortable, and loaded with safety options, and starts for less than $30 Grand. And that's a very good deal when you see it. A word to the wise is sufficient. And Stay Home, and Stay Safe.
