The Bottom Line: It seems like every car manufacturer has a high end performance division, with special call out letters glued to the rear deck lid. Dodge has SRT, Volkswagen has GTI, Toyota has TRD, and Mercedes has AMG.
Most people associate Mercedes Benz vehicles with AMG. Yet AMG is not exactly the same as Mercedes Benz. AMG is the performance division, and high end trim division, of Mercedes Benz. AMG Mercedes Benz automobiles are tuned in a specific way, and upgraded for additional power, with special paint and interior designs.
For 2021, Mercedes is adding new AMG models, and at the same time introducing a new designation: the 53 series. It combines powerful performance, with sporty style, and high efficiency. Features which are common to all the new 53 series models are: a twin blade radiator grille, the front apron A wing design, AMG specific side sill panels, the rear apron with diffuser insert, and round exhaust tailpipe tips, in a high gloss polished chrome finish.
At their heart lies a new, electrified, 3.0L liter engine featuring twin turbo charging by means of an exhaust gas turbocharger, and an auxiliary electric compressor. The 6 cylinder in-line turbo engine generates 429 hp horse power and delivers 384 ft-lb of torque. The EQ Boost starter / alternator momentarily provides an additional 16 kw of power output, plus additional torque, and feeds the 48 volt on-board electrical system.
This week Mercedes Benz sent me a 2021 Mercedes Benz AMG GLE 53 4Matic+ Turbo SUV to test drive and review. This is a high end Mercedes that has every accessory that AMG & MBZ can put on it. The option list alone is over $15 Grand.
This model starts with a base price of $76,500. The options on the window sticker are: The AMG Tartufo Brown and Black Nappa Leather interior, with the dark grey Linden Wood trim, and a AMG Performance Nappa Leather covered steering wheel, for a cool $2,990.
Next add in: An Air Ionization Filter system for $350, the AMG 21" Twin 5 Spoke Black Alloy wheels for $200, the MB Tex wrapped dashboard and door trims for $350, the AMG Performance Exhaust System for $1,250, Rear Side Air Bags for $700, Heated and Cooled Cup Holders for $180, the Multi Contour front seats with Massage features for $1,100, the Heated and Ventilated Front Seats for $450, a Black Dinamica Headliner for $1,600, the MBUX Interior Assistant for $200, the Pre Wiring Package for the Rear Seat Entertainment System for $170, the MBUX Technology Package for $1,450, the Driver Assistance Plus Package for $1,950, the Parking Assistance Package for $500, the Warmth and Comfort Package for $1,050, and the AMG Night Exterior Black Out Package for $750. Holey Moley, that's a lot of options!
The total MSRP manufactures suggested retail price, including the $995 destination and delivery charge, came to: $92,735. As you might expect with a AMG MBZ that costs, with state sales tax, DMV registration and license plate fees, plus the dealer prep and delivery charge, over $104,000 out the door, this SUV is reserved for the privileged few who routinely spend over $100 Grand on their new cars.
People always ask me, how do these press cars handle and drive? Well, this time the answer is easy. It drives, rides and handles fantastically! This AMG MBZ has 429 HP on tap, with a 9 speed AMG modified automatic transmission, coupled to an AMG Performance 4Matic+ AWD traction control driveline, with an AMG AirMatic Ride Control air suspension system, with AMG Dynamic Select.
This means the driver can pick any driving condition from: performance, snow, rain, sleet, mud or just pure comfort, and the AMG programmed computers dial in the driving dynamics to match your driving selection.
The custom designed AMG interior, and exterior appointments, have the looks to stand tall in any situation. From the kneeling air suspension system, to the leather interior with real wood trim, heated, cooled and ventilated seats, and cup holders, to the ultra smooth black suede headliner, this SUV just screams performance, comfort and AMG style.
You will be looking sharp when your dropping the kids off at school, shopping at the mall, or having lunch at the country club. Plus you get to park with the big boys toys. The valet crew knows that all AMG Mercedes Benz cars are special, and they like to show them off and park them up front, for everyone to see.
So, if you have an extra $100K Large laying around the house, and want to make a statement with the neighbors, or you just want to own and drive a specialize SUV that can do it all, this 2021 Mercedes Benz AMG GLE 53 4Matic+ Turbo SUV is the one you have been looking for.
A word to the wise is sufficient. Be Smart, Stay Safe, and Just Breathe. Remember “You Are What You Drive ©” And maybe, just for those reasons alone, you should “Drive one, Buy one, Today ©”.
