The 2026 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport
Double Cab 4x2 Midsize PU Truck

You Are What You Drive - A Bottom Line Review
By Tony Leopardo - The Car Guy © AutoWire.Net

What is a Tacoma? The Tacoma is a midsize pickup truck built in the Baja, California assembly plant and sold worldwide by Toyota. The 2026 Tacoma is a highly capable, fourth generation midsize pickup truck, offering turbocharged gas and i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrains. It features 8 trims, including SR, TRD, and Hybrid, an optional 6 speed manual transmission, or an 8 speed automatic transmission, and advanced technology, like a 14" inch touch screen, and Trailhunter and TRD Pro models.

The 2026 Tacoma is ready to continue it's run as the best selling midsize pickup truck in America for more than 20 years, and still counting. This years updates include a black front bumper logo on the TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport, and TRD Pre-Runner trims, and all have 18" inch TRD alloy spoke wheels with 32" Goodyear All Terrain tires.

Here are the new features and updates for the 2026 models:
Powertrains: A 2.4L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine produces up 278 HP horsepower on gas, or 326 HP horsepower with the hybrid electric motor assist.
Performance: Features include rear coil springs for a better ride, Crawl Control, and Multi-Terrain Select.
Updates: The 2026 model includes new exterior colors like Heritage Blue and Wave Maker, while standardizing tow hitches on specific models.
Cabin Tech: Has a standard 8" inch digital screen, or an available 14" inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a 10 speaker JBL audio system, including a Bluetooth connected portable speaker.
Utility: Available in Double Cab or XtraCab configurations with a 5' foot or 6' foot bed option. Built on the TNGA-F global truck platform, shared with the Tundra, the 2026 Tacoma focuses on high strength steel construction, improved suspension components, and superior off road performance.

The 2026 Tacoma starts at $32,245 for the SR trim, excluding delivery fees. This base model features a 2.4L liter turbocharged engine, with 17" inch steel wheels, and in a 2 door XtraCab configuration. Prices can exceed $64,000 for top tier trims like the TRD Pro. Here is the base price list for the 8 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck models:

SR: $32,245
SR5: $36,335
TRD PreRunner: $38,835
TRD Sport: $40,015
TRD Off-Road: $42,515
Limited: $53,270
Trailhunter: $63,450
TRD Pro: $64,450

Important notes: The $32,000 base price is for the SR XtraCab 2 door configuration. The hybrid powertrain i-FORCE MAX starts at a higher price point, around $46,000, and delivery fees, DMV and sales tax are extra. The price may vary by dealer and region too.

This week Toyota sent me a 2026 Tacoma to test drive and review. The base window sticker price for this TRD Sport Double Cab 4x2 midsize truck is $40,015. The options on the pickup are: the TRD Sport Premium package for $8,465, the bed mat for $200, the black tailgate insert for $89, the spare tire lock for $75, and the wheel locks for $105.
The manufacturer's suggested retail price, MSRP, including the $1,595 delivery charge is: $50,544.

After adding in the state and local sales tax, plus the DMV and dealer fees, the out the door and in your driveway total purchase price came to $56,862. At just 221 bucks under $57 Grand you get a top of the class selling midsize pickup truck that gets 20 MPG city, 24 MPG highway, and 22 MPG in combined driving that can take you just about anywhere you want to go, and still can tow your boat, camper or cargo trailer.

The 2026 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport Double Cab 4x2 with the i-Force 2.4L liter turbocharged engine can tow up to 6,400 pounds. This midsize truck, when properly equipped, offers significant towing capacity designed for both city driving and highway performance, featuring an 8 speed automatic transmission and a 317 lb-ft of torque powertrain. Here are the towing spec's:

TRD Sport Max Towing: 6,400 lbs.
Engine and Powertrain: i-FORCE 2.4L turbocharged engine.
Configuration: Double Cab with the 5' foot or 6' foot bed option.
Max Payload: Up to 1,705 lbs in the non-hybrid trim.
Required Equipment: The towing package is required to achieve maximum ratings.

The TRD Sport model is tailored more for on the road handling, with a sport tuned suspension, and it offers a higher towing capacity than the TRD Off-Road edition with 6,300 lbs, or the i-FORCE MAX hybrid models max towing capacity of 6,000 lbs.

The 2026 Toyota Tacoma buyer is a practical enthusiast or lifestyle seeker, from ages 30 to 50, prioritizing high resale value, reliability, and off-road capability over maximum towing capacity. They are often urban and suburban dwellers who use the truck for weekend adventures, such as camping, kayaking, or hauling dirt bikes, rather than daily construction work.

* The Overlander Buyer: Focused on the Trailhunter or TRD Pro trims, this buyer wants factory built adventure capability, including specialized suspension, rock rails, and high tech off-road suspension.
* The Weekend Warrior Buyer: Opts for the TRD Off-Road or PreRunner, needing a rugged look and 4x4, or 2WD with a locking differential, for dirt roads and mountain trails.
* The Practical Lifestyle Buyer: Chooses the SR5 or Limited trims for daily driving, commuting, and towing, valuing the Tacoma's smaller footprint compared to the full size trucks.
* The Workhorse Buyer: A small business owner needing the base SR trim, which offers long term durableability and is a lower cost utility vehicle.

Buyers are frequently switching from older trucks, and are attracted to the 2026's refined, efficient powertrain and high tech features, making them smart buyers, who value versatility, power and style.

So, if your looking for a great midsize pickup truck, then call, click or visit your local Toyota dealer for a test drive, and a Bottom Line price review, on the new 2026 Tacoma TRD Sport Double Cab 4x2 midsize PU truck.
