The 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness TDI AWD SUV

You Are What You Drive - A Bottom Line Review
By Tony Leopardo - The Car Guy © AutoWire.Net

What is an Outback? The Outback is a midsize SUV built in the Ota, Gunma, Japan assembly plant and sold worldwide by Subaru. The 2026 Outback is a heavily redesigned, 7th generation midsize SUV, that completely abandons its classic station wagon roots for a taller, boxier, and more truck like silhouette. It blends rugged symmetrical all wheel drive and high ground clearance with massive cargo space, into a highly sensible and very useful down to earth motoring package.

The Wilderness Edition is now bolder and taller with an off road aesthetic. Aimed squarely at outdoor lifestyle enthusiasts, it offers standard Symmetrical AWD, and a heavily upgraded interior now with physical climate buttons.

The 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness TDI AWD SUV name breaks down into the manufacturer, model, trim level, engine type, and drivetrain capabilities. You can explore and configure this specific vehicle using the Subaru Outback Wilderness Official Page.

2026: The model year of the vehicle, indicating it belongs to the latest production generation.
Subaru: Is the Japanese automotive manufacturer that produces the vehicle.
Outback: The specific model name and vehicle line, recognized for blending station wagon utility with SUV capabilities.
Wilderness: This is the specialized, rugged trim level. It equips the vehicle for off roading with an upgraded suspension, a massive 9.5" inches of ground clearance, all terrain tires, front skid plates, and unique body cladding. The Wilderness trim is powered by a 2.4L liter turbocharged BOXER engine that delivers 260 HP horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque.
TDI: In the context of this specific Subaru name tag TDI stands for Turbocharged Direct Injection.
AWD: Means All Wheel Drive. The Outback features Subaru's legendary Symmetrical All Wheel Drive, which continuously sends power to all four wheels for optimal traction on loose terrain and wet and slippery roads.
SUV: Stands for Sport Utility Vehicle, categorizing its body style, ride height, and cargo capacity.

Some of the key highlights of the 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness TDI AWD SUV are:
The Look: It is officially larger, and taller by over an inch, and far more truck like in its proportions than previous iterations.
Engine & Power: Buyers have two Subaru Boxer 4 cylinder engines to chose from, a base naturally aspirated engine 180 HP engine, or a punchy 2.4L liter turbocharged variant with 260 HP paired with a CVT continuous variable transmission.
Interior Tech: The cabin features a massive 12.1" inch tablet style touch screen with full screen Apple CarPlay, while also adding physical knobs and buttons for climate control and radio volume based on positive consumer feedback.
Capability: It comes standard with 8.7" inches of ground clearance, which jumps to 9.5" inches on the ultra rugged Wilderness trim
Pricing: Base models start around $36,000, while the fully loaded turbo models, like the Touring XT editions, push the base price toward the $50,000 mark.

The 2026 Subaru Outback trims cater to completely different needs. The Premium is the value oriented everyday driver, the Wilderness is the trail ready rugged off roader with a standard turbocharged engine, and the Touring is the luxury flagship model, prioritizing interior refinement and semi automated highway driving technology.

Premium Edition: The everyday value trim line is considered the sweet spot for budget minded buyers and everyday utility, this model balances modern technology with everyday comfort.
Engine: Comes with a 2.5L 4 cylinder gas engine with 180 HP.
Capability: Standard Symmetrical All Wheel Drive with 8.7" inches of ground clearance.
Interior: StarTex water repellent or cloth upholstery, heated front bucket seats, and a 12.3" inch digital instrument cluster.
Key Focus: Serves as the core foundation for tech, delivering the primary 12.1" inch multimedia screen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Wilderness Edition: This is the off road specialist edition built specifically for the outdoors, this trim pushes adventure capability much further than the rest of the lineup.
Engine: Has a 2.4L Turbocharged 4 cylinder gas engine with 260 HP horsepower.
Capability: Has a raised suspension for 9.5" inches of ground clearance, upgraded dual function X-Mode driving selections for deep snow, gravel and mud, front skid plates, and all terrain tires on matte black 17" inch alloy wheels.
Suspension: The Wilderness Edition now has electronically controlled adaptive dampers, which add ruggedness to match its capabilities with an all new skyhook suspension system, and that makes it one of the best on-road and off-roaders out there today.
Interior: StarTex water repellent seating and unique copper interior and exterior accents, and a set of all weather contoured floor mats.
Key Focus: Maximum ground clearance, rugged bumpers for better approach and departure angles, and a reinforced fixed ladder type roof rack for all your heavy gear.

Touring Edition: This is the Luxury Flagship Outback edition. The Touring trim brings a premium, upscale luxury experience, without sacrificing the SUV's practical nature
Engine: It has the standard 2.5L liter engine, while the optional Touring XT trim comes with the 2.4L Turbocharged engine.
Capability: Standard 8.7" inches of ground clearance; tuned more for highway smoothness than rock crawling.
Interior: Premium perforated Nappa leather seating, ventilated front bucket seats, and a heated steering wheel.
Key Focus: Convenience and advanced tech. It features a 360 degree camera system, a smart auto dimming rearview mirror, and semi automated hands free driving assistance on certain highways

To showcase this new 2026 Outback this week Subaru sent me a Wilderness TDI model to test drive and review. The base window sticker price for this AWD SUV is $44,995.
The only option on the test car is the nicely equipped customer preferred Option Package #23 for $4,090. The manufacturer's suggested retail price, MSRP, including the $1,450 delivery charge is: $50,935.

After adding in the state and local sales tax, plus the DMV and dealer fees, the out the door and in your driveway total purchase price came to $56,852. At just 148 bucks under $57 Grand you get an outdoorsy and very off road capable SUV, that gets 21 MPG in city driving, 27 MPG in highway driving, and 23 MPG in combined driving. That is a nice price, and nice fuel economy numbers, for a midsize SUV with all the options and equipment of a much more expensive SUV, and you get all of this for less than $57,000.

So, if your buying budget is in the $40,000 to $60,000 range you should put an Outback on your ride and drive list. And then call, click or visit your local Subaru dealer for a test drive, and a bottom line price review on the 2026 Outback Wilderness TDI AWD SUV, and remember that the base price for a new Outback starts at only $36,445.

The 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness is promoted with the campaign tagline "Drive on the Wild Side". Other taglines and core themes for the vehicle include "Outback by name, Wilderness by nature" and "Built for Adventure". These slogans highlight the vehicle's rugged upgrades and off road and nature ready attitude.

The key to life is to learn something new every day, and by reading my Bottom Line review, I hope you did just that, learned about something new and exciting. So, be smart, stay safe, and just breathe. Remember, You Are What You Drive, and maybe, just for those reasons alone, you should Drive one, Buy one, Today. Drive safely, have a great day, and enjoy the ride, as the future looks nice and bright - Tony the Car Guy.
