You Are What You Drive - A Bottom Line Review
By Tony Leopardo - The Car Guy © AutoWire.Net

What is a Trailseeker? The Trailseeker is an all new midsize SUV built in the Gunma Yajima assembly plant in Japan, and sold worldwide by Subaru. Trailseeker is an all electric vehicle designed to feel and drive like an EV alternative to the classic Subaru Outback wagon. If you like the Outback, and want to go all electric, then take a good look at Trailseeker. Same size, same company, same look, but no gas engine, as it's an EV with 2 electric motors and still has Subaru's standard symmetrical all wheel drive.

To promote this all new 2026 EV model this week Subaru sent me a Trailseeker to test drive and review. The base window sticker price for this Limited Edition is $43,995 with no options. The manufacturer's suggested retail price, MSRP, including the $1,450 delivery charge is: $45,445.

After adding in the state and local sales tax, plus the DMV and dealer fees, the out the door and in your driveway total purchase price came to $51,126. At just 126 bucks over  $51 Grand you get Subaru's all new 2026 all electric SUV that can go up to 274 miles on a full battery pack, and can charge from 10% to 80% battery capacity in less than 30 minutes using a Level 3 DC fast charger.

Here are some of the key specifications and performance parameters of the Trailseeker:
Power: Standard dual motor Symmetrical all wheel drive delivering 375 horsepower.
Battery & Range: A 74.7 kWh battery with an a driving range of up to 274 miles.
Charging: Fast charging capability goes from 10% to 80% in about 28 minutes using a 150 kW DC fast charging station with a standard NACS port.
Capability: Features 8.5" inches of ground clearance with dual X-Mode off-road settings, and a 3,500 lb towing capacity.
Acceleration: Goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 to 4.5 seconds.
Pricing: The base Trailseeker model starts at only $39,995, making it a spacious and powerful electric EV alternative to the gas engine powered traditional Subaru wagons.

The 2026 Subaru Trailseeker is available in 3 trim levels. Each model has the same 375 HP horsepower dual motor AWD powertrain and the 74.7 kWh battery pack and the 14" touchscreen. The upgrades focus mainly on comfort, convenience, and tech. All models share the identical platform, and moving up the trim model lineup simply adds in more additional technology and creature comforts.

Premium with a base price of $39,995: The entry point Premium Edition is nicely well equipped. It comes standard with a set of 18" inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, heated front seats, a power adjustable driver's seat, and the flagship 14" inch touchscreen with a navigation system featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Limited with a base price of $43,995: The limited Edition adds in cold weather luxury and convenience. Notable upgrades include a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, a premium Harman Kardon sound system, a digital key access, and a hands free kick sensor to open the rear tailgate.

Touring with a base price of $46,555: The fully loaded Touring Edition model shifts into premium territory. It replaces standard appointments with a panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats, a 360 degree surround view camera system, and unique radiant leg heaters to preserve battery life in the winter, meaning it heats you up directly, instead of heating the entire interior.

Driving the all new electric 2026 Subaru Trailseeker EV SUV feels very smooth and quite fast, with a plush ride quality that rivals all the luxury brands on the road today.
So, why buy one? The 2026 Trailseeker is an all electric midsize SUV that blends Subaru's traditional rugged capabilities, with a quick and powerful all electric powertrain starting at a base window sticker price of only $39,995, with these spec's:

Strong performance: The dual motor AWD all wheel drive setup pumps out 375 HP horsepower and 396 pound-feet of torque from its standard dual electric motors, hitting 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.
Spacious Cabin: Includes durable moisture and dirt resistant StarTex upholstery, a large 14" inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a roomy backseat area.
Daily driver: In Normal and Eco mode the throttle response is kind of muted. It feels like a typical gas powered crossover SUV, until you floor it, and then it goes into linear power mode and your pass the speed limit in just a few seconds, and your still accelerating.
Off Road Ground Clearance: It features 8.5" inches of ground clearance and dual function X-Mode with grip control, making it far more capable on dirt and snow than most standard electric crossovers.
Quiet cabin: An acoustic windshield and front side glass help minimize wind noise at highway speeds, and since there is no engine noise, inside the Trailseeker is extra quiet.
Solid Range: It offers an EPA estimated range of up to 281 miles, or 274 miles with the larger 20" inch alloy wheels upgrade, which proves realistic in real world testing.
Modern Charging: It comes with the NACS - North American Charging Standard - plug for easy access to supercharging networks, and supports 150 kW DC fast charging to go from a 10% to 80% charge in about 28 to 30 minutes.
Unique Cold Weather Features: Higher trims feature innovative radiant leg heaters designed to warm the front occupants directly, and save battery life, compared to heating up the entire interior.
