You Are What You Drive - A Bottom Line Review
By Tony Leopardo - The Car Guy © AutoWire.Net

What is a Uncharted? The 2026 Subaru Uncharted is an all new subcompact all electric crossover SUV built in partnership with Toyota. Roughly the size of a gasoline powered Subaru Crosstrek, it serves as the new entry level model in Subaru’s all new electric vehicle lineup.

Mechanically it shares its architecture and major platform components with the Toyota C-HR EV, but it features distinct futuristic styling, including unique multi pod lighting systems and an illuminated Subaru grill logo. With different performance and drivetrain options the Uncharted is available in 2 distinct powertrain configurations across 3 trims.

First up is the Premium front wheel drive FWD edition powered by a single electric motor producing 221 HP horsepower. This marks the first time Subaru has offered a front wheel drive vehicle in the United States in over 30 years.

Next are the Sport and the GT all wheel drive AWD models. These trims add a second electric motor to the rear axle, with a combined 338 HP horsepower. Thanks to instant electric torque the dual motor versions launch from 0 to 60 mph in only 4.6 seconds, making it one of the quickest accelerating vehicles Subaru has ever put into production.

Range and off road capability are great on all versions as they are equipped with a 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The single motor Premium FWD model offers up to 308 miles of range. Choosing the dual motor AWD setup drops the estimated range slightly to 287 miles in the Sport Edition, and the GT model gets 273 miles in the top tier trim.

Fast charging features a standard Tesla style NACS North American Charging Standard port with access to over 25,000 Tesla Superchargers. It supports DC fast charging up to 150 kW, allowing the Uncharted to charge from 10% to 80% full in about 28 minutes.

Despite its Toyota roots the AWD trims stay true to Subaru's rugged branding by including 8.2" inches of ground clearance and a dual-function X-MODE traction system with Grip Control, optimized for driving in snow, dirt, and deep mud.

Inside the Uncharted blends minimalist design with modern technology starting with a centerpiece 14" inch touchscreen running Toyota derived multimedia architecture, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and it has a sporty squared off steering wheel. The cabin features dual 15W wireless device chargers, an available panoramic fixed glass roof panel, and water repellent StarTex upholstery on the mid tier trim models.

The 2026 Subaru Uncharted EV base pricing and spec's for the 3 trim lines are:
Premium Edition - FWD front wheel drive, 221 HP, 308 miles of range, for $34,995.
Sport Edition - Symmetrical AWD, 338 HP, 287 miles of range, for $39,795.
GT Edition - Symmetrical AWD, 338 HP, 273 miles of range, for $43,795.

To showcase the new EV models this week Subaru sent me a 2026 Uncharted GT to test drive and review. The base window sticker price for this all electric vehicle is $43,795.
The only option on the GT EV SUV is the premium 2 tone paint job for $970. The total manufacturer's suggested retail price, MSRP, including the $1,450 delivery charge is: $46,215.

After adding in the state and local sales tax, plus the DMV and dealer fees, the out the door and in your garage total purchase price came to $51,992. At just 8 bucks under $52 Grand you get Subaru's all new all electric EV SUV that can go up to 273 miles on a full battery charge. Here are the charging times listed by the available power plug levels.
Level 1 - Household outlet with a 120V plug takes just over 24 hours on multiple days for a full charge, and is mainly used for emergency charging or for trickle time top offs.
Level 2 - Home charging with a 240V outlet takes about 6 hours for a full charge from near empty.
Level 3 - Public fast charging takes about 28 minutes to go from 10% to 80% using a 350-kW DC fast charger, or a compatible Tesla Supercharger via its native NACS North American Charging Standard port.
Having all 3 charging options gives you the flexibility to drive anywhere you want to go, and know that you can charge up on the road or at home, with any power plug source.

OK, then why buy one? The 2026 Subaru Uncharted EV stands out primarily as a sporty, quick, and highly maneuverable alternative to the boxier electric crossovers. Essentially serving as a battery powered counterpart to the popular Crosstrek, it is Subaru's most compact and affordable entry into the electric vehicle market.

The primary reasons to choose the Uncharted boil down to a few key advantages:
Performance & Handling: If you want an EV that feels more like a sporty hatchback than a heavy SUV, the Uncharted delivers. While the base front wheel drive FWD trim offers a modest 221 HP horsepower, opting for the dual motor all wheel drive AWD Sport or GT trims bumps output to 338 HP horsepower. This cuts the Crosstrek's 0 to 60 MPH time in half, sending the AWD model to highway speeds in just 4.3 seconds, and with its low center of gravity it gives the Uncharted a flat, composed, and highly engaging driving feel that mirrors an electric sports car.

Genuine Light Off Road Capability: Most subcompact EVs are strictly built for paved city streets, but the Uncharted retains classic Subaru outdoorsy DNA. It offers a generous 8.2 inches of ground clearance alongside an available dual-function X-MODE with Grip Control. This system optimizes traction specifically for snow, dirt, deep mud, and sand, allowing you to confidently take it down rutted forest trails or gravel covered paths.

Aggressive Entry Level Pricing: Value is a major selling point for the entry level trims. Starting at an impressive $34,995 for the Premium FWD model, the Uncharted stands out as one of the most affordable electric SUVs on the market. While stepping up to the dual motor AWD Sport Edition for $39,795, or the GT for $43,795, the 3 trims provide the best bang for your electric vehicle buying bucks.

Seamless Charging & Tesla Supercharger Access: Subaru equipped the Uncharted with a native North American Charging Standard NACS port, granting drivers immediate plug and play access to more than 25,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America, without needing a clunky adapter. On a DC fast charger at its max 150-kW output it can charge the battery from 10% to 80% in roughly 28 minutes, supported by cold weather preconditioning to keep charging speeds consistent when the temperature drops.

Daily Efficiency & Usable Range: Depending on the configuration you choose, the driving range easily handles daily commutes and road trips quite well on all 3 models.
Premium FWD: Has the maximum range at 308 miles on a full charge.
Sport AWD: Drops the range slightly to 287 miles due to the dual motor setup.
GT AWD: Gets 273 miles with the 20" inch alloy wheels and added luxury features.

What ever model you choose you will always get Subaru's long term commitment to safety, reliability and value.
